Breast Surgery

Frequently Asked Questions

Breast surgery involves procedures to treat conditions like cancer or benign tumors. Common types include lumpectomy (removing a small tumor), mastectomy (removing one or both breasts), breast reconstruction (rebuilding the breast after mastectomy), breast biopsy (sampling tissue for diagnosis), and sentinel node biopsy (checking for cancer spread in lymph nodes). These surgeries aim to remove or manage abnormal tissue and restore the breast’s appearance and function.

Breast surgery risks and complications include infection at the surgical site, bleeding or hematoma (a collection of blood outside blood vessels), and pain. There may be scarring, changes in breast sensation, or lymphedema (swelling due to fluid accumulation, especially if lymph nodes are removed). Other risks include wound healing issues and potential changes in breast appearance or shape. There’s also a risk of postoperative complications such as seroma (fluid accumulation) and, in some cases, recurrence of cancer.

The recovery period for breast surgery varies by procedure. For a lumpectomy, recovery typically takes 1 to 2 weeks, with most patients resuming normal activities within this time. A mastectomy generally requires a 4 to 6-week recovery period, including time for wound healing and initial physical therapy. Breast reconstruction, whether immediate or delayed, often involves a recovery of 6 to 12 weeks, depending on the complexity of the procedure. Full recovery can take longer, especially if additional treatments like radiation or chemotherapy are needed

To prepare for breast surgery, patients should follow these steps: undergo preoperative tests such as blood work and imaging scans, stop smoking and avoid alcohol to improve healing, and discuss any medications with their doctor, particularly those affecting bleeding. Patients should arrange for post-surgery care, including help at home and transportation, and follow preoperative fasting instructions if required. It’s also helpful to prepare emotionally by understanding the procedure and recovery process, and to discuss any concerns with the healthcare team to ensure a smooth surgery and recovery.

Follow-up care after breast surgery typically includes regular check-ups to monitor healing, assess for any complications, and review pathology results. Patients may need additional imaging tests, like mammograms or ultrasounds, to check for any remaining or recurrent issues. Wound care and monitoring for signs of infection or fluid buildup are essential. Physical therapy may be recommended to improve mobility and reduce lymphedema. Medication adjustments, including pain management and hormone therapies, may be necessary, and ongoing support for emotional and psychological well-being is also important.
